Adams was author of _[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")_ , which originated in 1978 as [a BBC radio comedy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(radio_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(radio series\)"), before developing into a "trilogy" of five books that sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime and generated [a television series](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(TV_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(TV series\)"), several stage plays, comics, [a video game](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(video_game\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(video game\)"), and a 2005 [feature film](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(film\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(film\)"). Adams's contribution to UK radio is commemorated in [The Radio Academy](/wiki/Radio_Academy "Radio Academy")'s Hall of Fame.[2] Adams also wrote _[Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency](/wiki/Dirk_Gently%27s_Holistic_Detective_Agency "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency")_ (1987) and _[The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul](/wiki/The_Long_Dark_Tea-Time_of_the_Soul "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul")_ (1988), and co-wrote _[The Meaning of Liff](/wiki/The_Meaning_of_Liff "The Meaning of Liff")_ (1983), _[The Deeper Meaning of Liff](/wiki/The_Deeper_Meaning_of_Liff "The Deeper Meaning of Liff")_ (1990), and _[Last Chance to See](/wiki/Last_Chance_to_See "Last Chance to See")_ (1990). He wrote two stories for the television series _[Doctor Who](/wiki/Doctor_Who "Doctor Who")_ , co-wrote _[City of Death](/wiki/City_of_Death "City of Death")_ (1979), and served as script editor for its [seventeenth season](/wiki/Doctor_Who_\(season_17\) "Doctor Who \(season 17\)"). He co-wrote the sketch "[Patient Abuse](/wiki/Patient_Abuse "Patient Abuse")" for the final episode of _[Monty Python's Flying Circus](/wiki/Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus "Monty Python's Flying Circus")_. A posthumous collection of his selected works, including the first publication of his final (unfinished) novel, was published as _[The Salmon of Doubt](/wiki/The_Salmon_of_Doubt "The Salmon of Doubt")_ in 2002. Adams was an advocate for environmentalism and conservation, a lover of fast cars,[3] technological innovation and the [Apple Macintosh](/wiki/Macintosh "Macintosh"), and a self-proclaimed "radical atheist". ## Contents * 1 Early life * 1.1 Education * 2 Career * 2.1 Writing * 2.1.1 Work on _Doctor Who_ * 2.1.2 _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ * 2.1.3 _Dirk Gently_ series * 2.2 Music * 2.2.1 Pink Floyd * 2.3 Computer games and projects * 3 Personal beliefs and activism * 3.1 Atheism and views on religion * 3.2 Environmental activism * 3.3 Technology and innovation * 4 Personal life * 5 Death and legacy * 6 Awards and nominations * 7 Works * 8 TV writing credits * 9 See also * 10 Notes * 11 References * 12 Further reading * 12.1 Articles * 12.2 Other * 13 External links ## Early life[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: Early life")] Adams was born in [Cambridge](/wiki/Cambridge "Cambridge") on 11 March 1952 to Christopher Douglas Adams (1927–1985), a management consultant and computer salesman, former probation officer and lecturer on probationary group therapy techniques, and nurse Janet (1927–2016), née Donovan.[4][5] The family moved a few months after his birth to the [East End of London](/wiki/East_End_of_London "East End of London"), where his sister, Susan, was born three years later.[6] His parents divorced in 1957; Douglas, Susan and their mother moved then to an [RSPCA](/wiki/RSPCA "RSPCA") animal shelter in [Brentwood, Essex](/wiki/Brentwood,_Essex "Brentwood, Essex"), run by his maternal grandparents.[7] Each remarried, giving Adams four half- siblings. A great-grandfather was the playwright [Benjamin Franklin Wedekind](/wiki/Frank_Wedekind "Frank Wedekind").[8] ### Education[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=2 "Edit section: Education")] Adams attended Primrose Hill Primary School in Brentwood. At the age of nine, he passed the entrance exam for [Brentwood School](/wiki/Brentwood_School_\(Essex\) "Brentwood School \(Essex\)"). He attended the [prep school](/wiki/Preparatory_school_\(United_Kingdom\) "Preparatory school \(United Kingdom\)") from 1959 to 1964, then the main school until December 1970. Adams was 6 feet (1.8 m) tall by age 12, and stopped growing at 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m). His form master, Frank Halford, said that Adams's height had made him stand out and that he had been self- conscious about it.[9][10] His ability to write stories made him well known in the school.[11] He became the only student ever to be awarded a ten out of ten by Halford for creative writing – something he remembered for the rest of his life, particularly when facing [writer's block](/wiki/Writer%27s_block "Writer's block").[6] Some of his earliest writing was published at the school, such as a report on its photography club in _The Brentwoodian_ in 1962, or spoof reviews in the school magazine _Broadsheet_ , edited by [Paul Neil Milne Johnstone](/wiki/Paul_Neil_Milne_Johnstone "Paul Neil Milne Johnstone"), who later became a character in _The Hitchhiker's Guide_. He also designed the cover of one issue of the _Broadsheet_ , and had a letter and short story published in _[The Eagle](/wiki/Eagle_\(comic\) "Eagle \(comic\)")_ , the boys' comic, in 1965. A poem entitled "A Dissertation on the task of writing a poem on a candle and an account of some of the difficulties thereto pertaining" written by Adams in January 1970 at the age of 17, was discovered in a cupboard at the school in early 2014.[12] On the strength of an essay on religious poetry that discussed [the Beatles](/wiki/The_Beatles "The Beatles") and [William Blake](/wiki/William_Blake "William Blake"), he was awarded an [Exhibition](/wiki/Exhibition_\(scholarship\) "Exhibition \(scholarship\)") in English at [St John's College, Cambridge](/wiki/St_John%27s_College,_Cambridge "St John's College, Cambridge") (where his father had also been a student),[13] going up in 1971. He wanted to join the [Footlights](/wiki/Footlights "Footlights"), an invitation-only student comedy club that has acted as a hothouse for comic talent. He was not elected immediately as he had hoped, and started to write and perform in revues with Will Adams (no relation) and Martin Smith; they formed a group called "Adams- Smith-Adams". He became a member of the Footlights by 1973.[14] Despite doing very little work — he recalled having completed three essays in three years — he graduated in 1974 with a 2:2 in [English literature](/wiki/English_literature "English literature").[15] ## Career[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=3 "Edit section: Career")] ### Writing[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=4 "Edit section: Writing")] After leaving university Adams moved back to London, determined to break into TV and radio as a writer. An edited version of the _Footlights Revue_ appeared on [BBC2](/wiki/BBC_Two "BBC Two") television in 1974. A version of the Revue performed live in London's [West End](/wiki/West_End_of_London "West End of London") led to Adams being discovered by [Monty Python](/wiki/Monty_Python "Monty Python")'s [Graham Chapman](/wiki/Graham_Chapman "Graham Chapman"). The two formed a brief writing partnership, earning Adams a writing credit in [episode 45](/wiki/List_of_Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus_episodes#6._Party_Political_Broadcast "List of Monty Python's Flying Circus episodes") of _Monty Python_ for a sketch called "[Patient Abuse](/wiki/Patient_Abuse "Patient Abuse")". The pair also co-wrote the "Marilyn Monroe" sketch which appeared on the soundtrack album of _[Monty Python and the Holy Grail](/wiki/The_Album_of_the_Soundtrack_of_the_Trailer_of_the_Film_of_Monty_Python_and_the_Holy_Grail "The Album of the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail")_. Adams is one of only two people other than the original Python members to get a writing credit (the other being [Neil Innes](/wiki/Neil_Innes "Neil Innes")).[16] [![](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0a/DNA_in_Monty_Python.jpg/220px- DNA_in_Monty_Python.jpg)](/wiki/File:DNA_in_Monty_Python.jpg) [](/wiki/File:DNA_in_Monty_Python.jpg "Enlarge") Adams in his first _[Monty Python](/wiki/Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus "Monty Python's Flying Circus")_ appearance, in full surgeon's garb Adams had two brief appearances in the fourth series of _[Monty Python's Flying Circus](/wiki/Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus "Monty Python's Flying Circus")_. At the beginning of episode 42, "The Light Entertainment War", Adams is in a surgeon's mask (as Dr. Emile Koning, according to on-screen captions), pulling on gloves, while [Michael Palin](/wiki/Michael_Palin "Michael Palin") narrates a sketch that introduces one person after another but never gets started. At the beginning of episode 44, "Mr. Neutron", Adams is dressed in a [pepper- pot](/wiki/List_of_recurring_Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus_characters#Pepperpots "List of recurring Monty Python's Flying Circus characters") outfit and loads a missile onto a cart driven by [Terry Jones](/wiki/Terry_Jones "Terry Jones"), who is calling for scrap metal ("Any old iron..."). The two episodes were broadcast in November 1974. Adams and Chapman also attempted non-Python projects, including _[Out of the Trees](/wiki/Out_of_the_Trees "Out of the Trees")_.[17] At this point Adams's career stalled; his writing style was unsuited to the then-current style of radio and TV comedy.[5] To make ends meet he took a series of odd jobs, including as a hospital porter, barn builder, and chicken shed cleaner. He was employed as a bodyguard by a [Qatari](/wiki/Qatari "Qatari") family, who had made their fortune in oil.[18] During this time Adams continued to write and submit sketches, though few were accepted. In 1976 his career had a brief improvement when he wrote and performed _Unpleasantness at Brodie's Close_ at the [Edinburgh Fringe](/wiki/Edinburgh_Fringe "Edinburgh Fringe") festival. By Christmas, work had dried up again, and a depressed Adams moved to live with his mother.[5] The lack of writing work hit him hard and low confidence became a feature of Adams's life; "I have terrible periods of lack of confidence [...] I briefly did therapy, but after a while I realised it was like a farmer complaining about the weather. You can't fix the weather – you just have to get on with it".[19] Some of Adams's early radio work included sketches for _[The Burkiss Way](/wiki/The_Burkiss_Way "The Burkiss Way")_ in 1977 and _[The News Huddlines](/wiki/The_News_Huddlines "The News Huddlines")_.[20] He also wrote, again with Chapman, the 20 February 1977 episode of _[Doctor on the Go](/wiki/Doctor_on_the_Go "Doctor on the Go")_ , a sequel to the _[Doctor in the House](/wiki/Doctor_in_the_House_\(TV_series\) "Doctor in the House \(TV series\)")_ television comedy series. After the [first radio series of _The Hitchhiker's Guide_](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(radio_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(radio series\)") became successful, Adams was made a BBC radio producer, working on _[Week Ending](/wiki/Week_Ending "Week Ending")_ and a pantomime called _[Black Cinderella Two Goes East](/wiki/Black_Cinderella_Two_Goes_East "Black Cinderella Two Goes East")_.[21] He left after six months to become the script editor for _[Doctor Who](/wiki/Doctor_Who "Doctor Who")_. In 1979, Adams and [John Lloyd](/wiki/John_Lloyd_\(producer\) "John Lloyd \(producer\)") wrote scripts for two half-hour episodes of _[Doctor Snuggles](/wiki/Doctor_Snuggles "Doctor Snuggles")_ : "The Remarkable Fidgety River" and "The Great Disappearing Mystery" (episodes eight and twelve).[22] John Lloyd was also co-author of two episodes from the original _Hitchhiker_ radio series ("Fit the Fifth" and "Fit the Sixth", also known as "Episode Five" and "Episode Six"), as well as _[The Meaning of Liff](/wiki/The_Meaning_of_Liff "The Meaning of Liff")_ and _[The Deeper Meaning of Liff](/wiki/The_Deeper_Meaning_of_Liff "The Deeper Meaning of Liff")_. #### Work on _Doctor Who_ [[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=5 "Edit section: Work on Doctor Who")] Main article: [Doctor Who](/wiki/Doctor_Who "Doctor Who") Adams sent the script for the _HHGG_ pilot radio programme to the _Doctor Who_ production office in 1978, and was commissioned to write _[The Pirate Planet](/wiki/The_Pirate_Planet "The Pirate Planet")_. He had also previously attempted to submit a potential film script, called _Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen_ , which later became his novel _[Life, the Universe and Everything](/wiki/Life,_the_Universe_and_Everything "Life, the Universe and Everything")_ (which in turn became the third _Hitchhiker's Guide_ radio series). Adams then went on to serve as script editor on the show for its seventeenth season in 1979. Altogether, he wrote three [_Doctor Who_ serials](/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_episodes_\(1963%E2%80%931989\) "List of Doctor Who episodes \(1963–1989\)") starring [Tom Baker](/wiki/Tom_Baker "Tom Baker") as the [Fourth Doctor](/wiki/Fourth_Doctor "Fourth Doctor"): * _The Pirate Planet_ (the second serial in the _[Key to Time](/wiki/The_Key_to_Time "The Key to Time")_ arc, in _[season 16](/wiki/Doctor_Who_\(season_16\) "Doctor Who \(season 16\)")_ )[23] * _[City of Death](/wiki/City_of_Death "City of Death")_ (with producer [Graham Williams](/wiki/Graham_Williams_\(television_producer\) "Graham Williams \(television producer\)"), from an original storyline by writer [David Fisher](/wiki/David_Fisher_\(writer\) "David Fisher \(writer\)"). It was transmitted under the pseudonym "[David Agnew](/wiki/David_Agnew "David Agnew")")[24] * _[Shada](/wiki/Shada_\(Doctor_Who\) "Shada \(Doctor Who\)")_ (only partially filmed; not televised due to industry disputes, but was later completed using animation for the unfinished scenes and broadcast as "Doctor Who: The Lost Episode" on [BBC America](/wiki/BBC_America "BBC America") 19 July 2018)[25] The episodes authored by Adams are some of the few that were not novelised, as Adams would not allow anyone else to write them and asked for a higher price than the publishers were willing to pay.[26] _Shada_ was later adapted as a novel by [Gareth Roberts](/wiki/Gareth_Roberts_\(writer\) "Gareth Roberts \(writer\)") in 2012 and _City of Death_ and _The Pirate Planet_ by [James Goss](/wiki/James_Goss_\(producer\) "James Goss \(producer\)") in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Elements of _Shada_ and _City of Death_ were reused in Adams's later novel _[Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency](/wiki/Dirk_Gently%27s_Holistic_Detective_Agency "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency")_ , in particular, the character of [Professor Chronotis](/wiki/Professor_Chronotis "Professor Chronotis"). [Big Finish Productions](/wiki/Big_Finish_Productions "Big Finish Productions") eventually remade _Shada_ as an audio play starring [Paul McGann](/wiki/Paul_McGann "Paul McGann") as the Doctor. Accompanied by partially animated illustrations, it was [webcast](/wiki/Doctor_Who_spin-offs#Webcasts "Doctor Who spin-offs") on the [BBC website](/wiki/BBC_Online "BBC Online") in 2003, and subsequently released as a two-CD set later that year. An omnibus edition of this version was broadcast on the digital radio station [BBC7](/wiki/BBC7 "BBC7") on 10 December 2005. In the _Doctor Who_ 2012 Christmas episode "[The Snowmen](/wiki/The_Snowmen#Production "The Snowmen")", writer [Steven Moffat](/wiki/Steven_Moffat "Steven Moffat") was inspired by a storyline that Adams pitched called _The Doctor Retires_.[27] #### _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ [[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=6 "Edit section: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")] Main article: [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ was a concept for a science-fiction comedy radio series pitched by Adams and radio producer [Simon Brett](/wiki/Simon_Brett "Simon Brett") to [BBC Radio 4](/wiki/BBC_Radio_4 "BBC Radio 4") in 1977. Adams came up with an outline for a pilot episode, as well as a few other stories (reprinted in [Neil Gaiman](/wiki/Neil_Gaiman "Neil Gaiman")'s book _[Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion](/wiki/Don%27t_Panic:_The_Official_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Companion "Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion")_ ) that could be used in the series. [![](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/17/Towelday- Innsbruck.jpg/170px-Towelday-Innsbruck.jpg)](/wiki/File:Towelday- Innsbruck.jpg) [](/wiki/File:Towelday-Innsbruck.jpg "Enlarge") [Towel Day](/wiki/Towel_Day "Towel Day") 2005 in Innsbruck, Austria, where Adams first had the idea of _The Hitchhiker's Guide_. In the novels, a towel is the most useful thing a space traveller can have. The annual Towel Day (25 May) was first celebrated in 2001, two weeks after Adams's death. According to Adams, the idea for the title occurred to him while he lay drunk in a field in [Innsbruck](/wiki/Innsbruck "Innsbruck"), Austria, gazing at the stars. He was carrying a copy of the _[Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe](/wiki/Hitch-hiker%27s_Guide_to_Europe "Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe")_ , and it occurred to him that "somebody ought to write a _Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ ".[28] Despite the original outline, Adams was said to make up the stories as he wrote. He turned to [John Lloyd](/wiki/John_Lloyd_\(producer\) "John Lloyd \(producer\)") for help with the final two episodes of [the first series](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Primary_and_Secondary_Phases#The_Primary_Phase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Primary and Secondary Phases"). Lloyd contributed bits from an unpublished science fiction book of his own, called _GiGax_.[29] Very little of Lloyd's material survived in later adaptations of _Hitchhiker's_ , such as the novels and the TV series. The TV series was based on the first six radio episodes, and sections contributed by Lloyd were largely re-written. BBC Radio 4 broadcast the first radio series weekly in the UK starting 8 March 1978, lasting until April.[30] The series was distributed in the United States by [National Public Radio](/wiki/NPR "NPR"). Following the success of the first series, another episode was recorded and broadcast, which was commonly known as the Christmas Episode. [A second series](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Primary_and_Secondary_Phases#The_Secondary_Phase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Primary and Secondary Phases") of five episodes was broadcast one per night, during the week of 21–25 January 1980. While working on the radio series (and with simultaneous projects such as _[The Pirate Planet](/wiki/The_Pirate_Planet "The Pirate Planet")_ ) Adams developed problems keeping to writing deadlines that got worse as he published novels. Adams was never a prolific writer and usually had to be forced by others to do any writing. This included being locked in a hotel suite with his editor for three weeks to ensure that _[So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish](/wiki/So_Long,_and_Thanks_for_All_the_Fish "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish")_ was completed.[31] He was quoted as saying, "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."[32] Despite the difficulty with deadlines, Adams wrote five novels in the series, published in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1992. The books formed the basis for other adaptations, such as three-part comic book adaptations for each of the first three books, an interactive text- adventure [computer game](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(computer_game\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(computer game\)"), and a photo-illustrated edition, published in 1994. This latter edition featured a [42 Puzzle](/wiki/42_Puzzle "42 Puzzle") designed by Adams, which was later incorporated into paperback covers of the first four _Hitchhiker's_ novels (the paperback for the fifth re-used the artwork from the hardback edition).[33] In 1980, Adams began attempts to turn the first _Hitchhiker's_ novel into a film, making several trips to Los Angeles, and working with Hollywood studios and potential producers. The next year, the radio series became the basis for a BBC television mini-series[34] broadcast in six parts. When he died in 2001 in California, he had been trying again to get the film project started with [Disney](/wiki/Disney "Disney"), which had bought the rights in 1998. The screenplay got a posthumous re-write by [Karey Kirkpatrick](/wiki/Karey_Kirkpatrick "Karey Kirkpatrick"), and [the resulting film](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(film\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(film\)") was released in 2005. Radio producer [Dirk Maggs](/wiki/Dirk_Maggs "Dirk Maggs") had consulted with Adams, first in 1993, and later in 1997 and 2000 about creating a third radio series, based on the third novel in the _Hitchhiker's_ series.[35] They also discussed the possibilities of radio adaptations of the final two novels in the five-book "trilogy". As with the film, this project was realised only after Adams's death. The third series, _[The Tertiary Phase](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Tertiary_to_Quintessential_Phases#The_Tertiary_Phase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases")_ , was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2004 and was subsequently released on audio CD. With the aid of a recording of his reading of _Life, the Universe and Everything_ and editing, Adams can be heard playing the part of Agrajag posthumously. _So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish_ and _Mostly Harmless_ made up the fourth and fifth radio series, respectively (on radio they were titled _[The Quandary Phase](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Tertiary_to_Quintessential_Phases#The_Quandary_Phase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases")_ and _[The Quintessential Phase](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_Tertiary_to_Quintessential_Phases#The_Quintessential_Phase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases")_ ) and these were broadcast in May and June 2005, and also subsequently released on Audio CD. The last episode in the last series (with a new, "more upbeat" ending) concluded with, "The very final episode of _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ by Douglas Adams is affectionately dedicated to its author."[36] #### _Dirk Gently_ series[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=7 "Edit section: Dirk Gently series")] [![](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ee/Douglas_Adams_San_Francisco.jpg/220px- Douglas_Adams_San_Francisco.jpg)](/wiki/File:Douglas_Adams_San_Francisco.jpg) [](/wiki/File:Douglas_Adams_San_Francisco.jpg "Enlarge") Adams in March 2000 Between Adams's first trip to [Madagascar](/wiki/Madagascar "Madagascar") with [Mark Carwardine](/wiki/Mark_Carwardine "Mark Carwardine") in 1985, and their series of travels that formed the basis for the radio series and non-fiction book _[Last Chance to See](/wiki/Last_Chance_to_See "Last Chance to See")_ , Adams wrote two other novels with a new cast of characters. _[Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency](/wiki/Dirk_Gently%27s_Holistic_Detective_Agency "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency")_ was published in 1987, and was described by its author as "a kind of ghost-horror-detective-time-travel- romantic-comedy-epic, mainly concerned with mud, music and quantum mechanics".[37] It was derived from two Doctor Who serials Adams had written.[ _[citation needed](/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed "Wikipedia:Citation needed")_ ] A sequel, _[The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul](/wiki/The_Long_Dark_Tea- Time_of_the_Soul "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul")_ , was published a year later. This was an entirely original work, Adams's first since _So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish._ After the book tour, Adams set off on his round-the- world excursion which supplied him with the material for _Last Chance to See_. _[The Salmon of Doubt](/wiki/The_Salmon_of_Doubt "The Salmon of Doubt")_ was incomplete when published posthumously. ### Music[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=8 "Edit section: Music")] Adams played the guitar left-handed and had a collection of twenty-four left- handed guitars when he died (having received his first guitar in 1964). He also studied piano in the 1960s.[38] [Pink Floyd](/wiki/Pink_Floyd "Pink Floyd") and [Procol Harum](/wiki/Procol_Harum "Procol Harum") had important influence on Adams's work. #### Pink Floyd[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=9 "Edit section: Pink Floyd")] Adams's official biography shares its name with the song ["Wish You Were Here"](/wiki/Wish_You_Were_Here_\(Pink_Floyd_song\) "Wish You Were Here \(Pink Floyd song\)") by [Pink Floyd](/wiki/Pink_Floyd "Pink Floyd"). The opening section of "[Shine On You Crazy Diamond](/wiki/Shine_On_You_Crazy_Diamond "Shine On You Crazy Diamond")" was featured in a section of the third episode of the original 1978 [_Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy_ radio series](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(radio_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(radio series\)") (broadcast only, cut from commercial releases). Adams was friends with Pink Floyd guitarist [David Gilmour](/wiki/David_Gilmour "David Gilmour") and, on Adams's 42nd birthday, he was invited to make a guest appearance at Pink Floyd's concert of 28 October 1994 at Earls Court in London, playing guitar on the songs ["Brain Damage"](/wiki/Brain_Damage_\(song\) "Brain Damage \(song\)") and ["Eclipse"](/wiki/Eclipse_\(Pink_Floyd_song\) "Eclipse \(Pink Floyd song\)").[39] Adams chose the name for Pink Floyd's 1994 album, _[The Division Bell](/wiki/The_Division_Bell "The Division Bell")_ , by picking the words from the lyrics to one of its tracks, "[High Hopes](/wiki/High_Hopes_\(Pink_Floyd_song\) "High Hopes \(Pink Floyd song\)")".[39] Pink Floyd and the song "[Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun](/wiki/Set_the_Controls_for_the_Heart_of_the_Sun "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun")" in particular, inspired Adams to create the rock band Disaster Area who appear in _The Restaurant at the End of the Universe_ , who planned to crash a space ship into a nearby star as a stunt during a concert.[40] Gilmour also performed at Adams's memorial service in 2001, and what would have been Adams's 60th birthday party in 2012.[41] ### Computer games and projects[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=10 "Edit section: Computer games and projects")] Douglas Adams created an [interactive fiction](/wiki/Interactive_fiction "Interactive fiction") version of _[HHGG](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(computer_game\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(computer game\)")_ with [Steve Meretzky](/wiki/Steve_Meretzky "Steve Meretzky") from [Infocom](/wiki/Infocom "Infocom") in 1984. In 1986 he participated in a week-long brainstorming session with the [Lucasfilm Games](/wiki/Lucasfilm_Games "Lucasfilm Games") team for the game _[Labyrinth](/wiki/Labyrinth:_The_Computer_Game "Labyrinth: The Computer Game")_. Later he was also involved in creating _[Bureaucracy](/wiki/Bureaucracy_\(computer_game\) "Bureaucracy \(computer game\)")_ as a parody of events in his own life. Adams was a founder-director and Chief Fantasist of [The Digital Village](/wiki/The_Digital_Village "The Digital Village"), a digital media and Internet company with which he created _[Starship Titanic](/wiki/Starship_Titanic "Starship Titanic")_ , a [Codie award](/wiki/Software_and_Information_Industry_Association#CODiE_Awards "Software and Information Industry Association")-winning and [BAFTA-nominated adventure game](/wiki/BAFTA#Games_Awards "BAFTA"), which was published in 1998 by [Simon & Schuster](/wiki/Simon_%26_Schuster "Simon & Schuster").[42][43] [Terry Jones](/wiki/Terry_Jones "Terry Jones") wrote the accompanying book, entitled _[Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic](/wiki/Starship_Titanic "Starship Titanic")_ , since Adams was too busy with the computer game to do both. In April 1999, Adams initiated the [h2g2](/wiki/H2g2 "H2g2") [collaborative writing](/wiki/Collaborative_writing "Collaborative writing") project, an experimental attempt at making _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ a reality, and at harnessing the collective brainpower of the internet community. It was hosted by BBC Online from 2001 to 2011.[42] In 1990, Adams wrote and presented a television documentary programme _[Hyperland](/wiki/Hyperland "Hyperland")_[44] which featured [Tom Baker](/wiki/Tom_Baker "Tom Baker") as a "software agent" (similar to the assistant pictured in Apple's [Knowledge Navigator](/wiki/Knowledge_Navigator "Knowledge Navigator") video of future concepts from 1987), and interviews with [Ted Nelson](/wiki/Ted_Nelson "Ted Nelson"), the co-inventor of [hypertext](/wiki/Hypertext "Hypertext") and the person who coined the term. Adams was an early adopter and advocate of hypertext. ## Personal beliefs and activism[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=11 "Edit section: Personal beliefs and activism")] ### Atheism and views on religion[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=12 "Edit section: Atheism and views on religion")] Adams described himself as a "radical [atheist](/wiki/Atheist "Atheist")", adding "radical" for emphasis so he would not be asked if he meant agnostic. He told [American Atheists](/wiki/American_Atheists "American Atheists") that this conveyed the fact that he really meant it. He imagined a sentient puddle who wakes up one morning and thinks, "This is an interesting world I find myself in – an interesting hole I find myself in – fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!" to demonstrate his view that the [fine-tuned universe](/wiki/Fine- tuned_universe "Fine-tuned universe") argument for God was a fallacy.[45] He remained fascinated by religion because of its effect on human affairs. "I love to keep poking and prodding at it. I've thought about it so much over the years that that fascination is bound to spill over into my writing."[46] The evolutionary biologist and atheist [Richard Dawkins](/wiki/Richard_Dawkins "Richard Dawkins") invited Adams to participate in his 1991 [Royal Institution Christmas Lectures](/wiki/Royal_Institution_Christmas_Lectures "Royal Institution Christmas Lectures"), where Dawkins calls Adams from the audience to read a passage from _[The Restaurant at the End of the Universe](/wiki/The_Restaurant_at_the_End_of_the_Universe "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe")_ which satirizes the absurdity of the thought that any one species would exist on Earth merely to serve as a meal to another species, such as humans.[47] Dawkins also uses Adams's influence to exemplify arguments for non-belief in his 2006 book _[The God Delusion](/wiki/The_God_Delusion "The God Delusion")_. Dawkins dedicated the book to Adams, whom he jokingly called "possibly [my] only convert" to atheism[48] and wrote on his death that "Science has lost a friend, literature has lost a luminary, the [mountain gorilla](/wiki/Mountain_gorilla "Mountain gorilla") and the [black rhino](/wiki/Black_rhino "Black rhino") have lost a gallant defender."[49] ### Environmental activism[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=13 "Edit section: Environmental activism")] Adams was also an [environmental activist](/wiki/Environmental_activist "Environmental activist") who campaigned on behalf of [endangered species](/wiki/Endangered_species "Endangered species"). This activism included the production of the non-fiction radio series _[Last Chance to See](/wiki/Last_Chance_to_See "Last Chance to See")_ , in which he and naturalist [Mark Carwardine](/wiki/Mark_Carwardine "Mark Carwardine") visited rare species such as the [kakapo](/wiki/Kakapo "Kakapo") and [baiji](/wiki/Baiji "Baiji"), and the publication of a tie-in book of the same name. In 1992, this was made into a CD-ROM combination of [audiobook](/wiki/Audiobook "Audiobook"), [e-book](/wiki/E-book "E-book") and picture slide show. Adams and Mark Carwardine contributed the 'Meeting a Gorilla' passage from _Last Chance to See_ to the book _[The Great Ape Project](/wiki/Great_Ape_Project "Great Ape Project")_.[50] This book, edited by [Paola Cavalieri](/wiki/Paola_Cavalieri "Paola Cavalieri") and [Peter Singer](/wiki/Peter_Singer "Peter Singer"), launched a wider-scale project in 1993, which calls for the extension of moral equality to include all great apes, human and non-human. In 1994, he participated in a climb of [Mount Kilimanjaro](/wiki/Mount_Kilimanjaro "Mount Kilimanjaro") while wearing a rhino suit for the British charity organisation [Save the Rhino International](/wiki/Save_the_Rhino "Save the Rhino"). Puppeteer [William Todd-Jones](/wiki/William_Todd-Jones "William Todd-Jones"), who had originally worn the suit in the London Marathon to raise money and bring awareness to the group, also participated in the climb wearing a rhino suit; Adams wore the suit while travelling to the mountain before the climb began. About £100,000 was raised through that event, benefiting schools in Kenya and a black rhinoceros preservation programme in [Tanzania](/wiki/Tanzania "Tanzania"). Adams was also an active supporter of the [Dian Fossey](/wiki/Dian_Fossey "Dian Fossey") Gorilla Fund. Since 2003, Save the Rhino has held an annual Douglas Adams Memorial Lecture around the time of his birthday to raise money for environmental campaigns.[51] ### Technology and innovation[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=14 "Edit section: Technology and innovation")] Adams bought his first word processor in 1982, having considered one as early as 1979. His first purchase was a Nexu. In 1983, when he and Jane Belson went to Los Angeles, he bought a [DEC](/wiki/Digital_Equipment_Corporation "Digital Equipment Corporation") [Rainbow](/wiki/Rainbow_100 "Rainbow 100"). Upon their return to England, Adams bought an [Apricot](/wiki/Apricot_Computers "Apricot Computers"), then a [BBC Micro](/wiki/BBC_Micro "BBC Micro") and a [Tandy 1000](/wiki/Tandy_1000 "Tandy 1000").[52] In _Last Chance to See_ , Adams mentions his [Cambridge Z88](/wiki/Cambridge_Z88 "Cambridge Z88"), which he had taken to [Zaire](/wiki/Zaire "Zaire") on a quest to find the [northern white rhinoceros](/wiki/Northern_white_rhinoceros "Northern white rhinoceros").[53] Adams's posthumously published work, _[The Salmon of Doubt](/wiki/The_Salmon_of_Doubt "The Salmon of Doubt")_ , features several articles by him on the subject of technology, including reprints of articles that originally ran in _[MacUser](/wiki/MacUser "MacUser")_ magazine, and in _[The Independent on Sunday](/wiki/The_Independent#The_Independent_on_Sunday "The Independent")_ newspaper. In these Adams claims that one of the first computers he ever saw was a [Commodore PET](/wiki/Commodore_PET "Commodore PET"), and that he had "adored" his Apple Macintosh ("or rather my family of however many Macintoshes it is that I've recklessly accumulated over the years") since he first saw one at Infocom's offices in Boston in 1984.[54] Adams was a Macintosh user from the time they first came out in 1984 until his death in 2001. He was the first person to buy a Mac in Europe, the second being [Stephen Fry](/wiki/Stephen_Fry "Stephen Fry").[55] Adams was also an "[Apple Master](/wiki/AppleMasters "AppleMasters")", celebrities whom Apple made into spokespeople for its products (others included [John Cleese](/wiki/John_Cleese "John Cleese") and [Gregory Hines](/wiki/Gregory_Hines "Gregory Hines")). Adams's contributions included a rock video that he created using the first version of [iMovie](/wiki/IMovie "IMovie") with footage featuring his daughter Polly. The video was available on Adams's [.Mac](/wiki/.Mac ".Mac") homepage. Adams installed and started using the first release of [Mac OS X](/wiki/MacOS "MacOS") in the weeks leading up to his death. His last post to his own forum was in praise of Mac OS X and the possibilities of its [Cocoa](/wiki/Cocoa_\(API\) "Cocoa \(API\)") programming framework. He said it was "awesome...", which was also the last word he wrote on his site.[56] Adams used email to correspond with [Steve Meretzky](/wiki/Steve_Meretzky "Steve Meretzky") in the early 1980s, during their collaboration on Infocom's version of _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_.[52] While living in New Mexico in 1993 he set up another e-mail address and began posting to his own [USENET](/wiki/USENET "USENET") newsgroup, alt.fan.douglas-adams, and occasionally, when his computer was acting up, to the comp.sys.mac hierarchy.[57] Challenges to the authenticity of his messages later led Adams to set up a message forum on his own website to avoid the issue. In 1996, Adams was a keynote speaker at the [Microsoft](/wiki/Microsoft "Microsoft") [Professional Developers Conference](/wiki/Professional_Developers_Conference "Professional Developers Conference") (PDC) where he described the personal computer as being a modelling device. The video of his keynote speech is archived on [Channel 9](/wiki/Channel_9_\(discussion_forum\) "Channel 9 \(discussion forum\)").[58] Adams was also a keynote speaker for the April 2001 [Embedded Systems Conference](/wiki/Academic_conference "Academic conference") in San Francisco, one of the major technical conferences on [embedded system](/wiki/Embedded_system "Embedded system") engineering.[59] ## Personal life[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=15 "Edit section: Personal life")] Adams moved to [Upper Street](/wiki/Upper_Street "Upper Street"), [Islington](/wiki/Islington "Islington"), in 1981[60] and to Duncan Terrace, a few minutes' walk away, in the late 1980s.[60] In the early 1980s Adams had an affair with novelist [Sally Emerson](/wiki/Sally_Emerson "Sally Emerson"), who was separated from her husband at that time. Adams later dedicated his book _[Life, the Universe and Everything](/wiki/Life,_the_Universe_and_Everything "Life, the Universe and Everything")_ to Emerson. In 1981 Emerson returned to her husband, [Peter Stothard](/wiki/Peter_Stothard "Peter Stothard"), a contemporary of Adams at [Brentwood School](/wiki/Brentwood_School_\(England\) "Brentwood School \(England\)"), and later editor of _[The Times](/wiki/The_Times "The Times")_. Adams was soon introduced by friends to Jane Belson, with whom he later became romantically involved. Belson was the "lady barrister" mentioned in the jacket-flap biography printed in his books during the mid-1980s ("He [Adams] lives in Islington with a lady barrister and an Apple Macintosh"). The two lived in Los Angeles together during 1983 while Adams worked on an early screenplay adaptation of _Hitchhiker's_. When the deal fell through, they moved back to London, and after several separations ("He is currently not certain where he lives, or with whom")[61] and a broken engagement, they married on 25 November 1991. Adams and Belson had one daughter together, Polly Jane Rocket Adams, born on 22 June 1994, shortly after Adams turned 42. In 1999 the family moved from London to [Santa Barbara, California](/wiki/Santa_Barbara,_California "Santa Barbara, California"), where they lived until his death. Following the funeral, Jane Belson and Polly Adams returned to London.[62] Belson died on 7 September 2011 of cancer, aged 59.[63] ## Death and legacy[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=16 "Edit section: Death and legacy")] [![](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/27/Grave_of_Douglas_Adams%2C_Highgate.jpg/170px- Grave_of_Douglas_Adams%2C_Highgate.jpg)](/wiki/File:Grave_of_Douglas_Adams,_Highgate.jpg) [](/wiki/File:Grave_of_Douglas_Adams,_Highgate.jpg "Enlarge") Adams's gravestone, [Highgate Cemetery](/wiki/Highgate_Cemetery "Highgate Cemetery"), North London Adams died of a [heart attack](/wiki/Myocardial_infarction "Myocardial infarction") due to undiagnosed [coronary artery disease](/wiki/Coronary_artery_disease "Coronary artery disease") on 11 May 2001, aged 49, after resting from his regular workout at a private gym in [Montecito, California](/wiki/Montecito,_California "Montecito, California").[64] His funeral was held on 16 May in Santa Barbara. His ashes were placed in [Highgate Cemetery](/wiki/Highgate_Cemetery "Highgate Cemetery") in north London in June 2002.[65] A memorial service was held on 17 September 2001 at [St Martin-in-the-Fields](/wiki/St_Martin-in-the-Fields "St Martin-in-the-Fields") church, [Trafalgar Square](/wiki/Trafalgar_Square "Trafalgar Square"), London. This became the first church service broadcast live on the web by the BBC.[66] Two days before Adams died, the [Minor Planet Center](/wiki/Minor_Planet_Center "Minor Planet Center") announced the naming of asteroid [18610 Arthurdent](/wiki/18610_Arthurdent "18610 Arthurdent").[67] In 2005, the asteroid [25924 Douglasadams](/wiki/25924_Douglasadams "25924 Douglasadams") was named in his memory.[68] In May 2002, _[The Salmon of Doubt](/wiki/The_Salmon_of_Doubt "The Salmon of Doubt")_ was published, containing many short stories, essays, and letters, as well as eulogies from [Richard Dawkins](/wiki/Richard_Dawkins "Richard Dawkins"), [Stephen Fry](/wiki/Stephen_Fry "Stephen Fry") (in the UK edition), [Christopher Cerf](/wiki/Christopher_Cerf_\(musician_and_television_producer\) "Christopher Cerf \(musician and television producer\)") (in the US edition), and [Terry Jones](/wiki/Terry_Jones "Terry Jones") (in the US paperback edition). It also includes eleven chapters of his unfinished novel, _The Salmon of Doubt_ , which was originally intended to become a new [Dirk Gently](/wiki/Dirk_Gently "Dirk Gently") novel, but might have later become the sixth _Hitchhiker_ novel.[69][70] Other events after Adams's death included a [webcast](/wiki/Webcast "Webcast") production of _[Shada](/wiki/Shada_\(Doctor_Who\) "Shada \(Doctor Who\)")_ , allowing the complete story to be told, radio dramatisations of the final three books in the _Hitchhiker's_ series, and the completion of [the film adaptation](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(film\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(film\)") of _[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(novel\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(novel\)")_. The film, released in 2005, posthumously credits Adams as a producer, and several design elements – including a head-shaped planet seen near the end of the film – incorporated Adams's features. A 12-part radio series based on the [Dirk Gently](/wiki/Dirk_Gently "Dirk Gently") novels was announced in 2007.[71] BBC Radio 4 also commissioned a third Dirk Gently radio series based on the incomplete chapters of _The Salmon of Doubt_ , and written by [Kim Fuller](/wiki/Kim_Fuller "Kim Fuller");[72] but this was dropped in favour of a BBC TV series based on the two completed novels.[73] A sixth _Hitchhiker_ novel, _[And Another Thing...](/wiki/And_Another_Thing..._\(novel\) "And Another Thing... \(novel\)")_ , by _[Artemis Fowl](/wiki/Artemis_Fowl_\(series\) "Artemis Fowl \(series\)")_ author [Eoin Colfer](/wiki/Eoin_Colfer "Eoin Colfer"), was released on 12 October 2009 (the 30th anniversary of the first book), published with the support of Adams's estate. A BBC Radio 4 _[Book at Bedtime](/wiki/Book_at_Bedtime "Book at Bedtime")_ adaptation and an audio book soon followed. On 25 May 2001, two weeks after Adams's death, his fans organised a tribute known as [Towel Day](/wiki/Towel_Day "Towel Day"), which has been observed every year since then.[74] An Apple Macintosh SE/30 once owned by Adams can be seen on display at [The Centre for Computing History](/wiki/The_Centre_for_Computing_History "The Centre for Computing History") in Cambridge.[75] In 2018, John Lloyd presented an hour-long episode of the BBC Radio Four documentary _[Archive on 4](/wiki/Archive_on_4 "Archive on 4")_ , discussing Adams' private papers, which are held at [St John's College, Cambridge](/wiki/St_John%27s_College,_Cambridge "St John's College, Cambridge").[76] The episode is available online.[76] A street at [27°35′21.8″S 48°39′44.0″W / 27.589389°S 48.662222°W / -27.589389; -48.662222 (Travessa Douglas Adams)](//geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Douglas_Adams¶ms=27_35_21.8_S_48_39_44.0_W_type:landmark_region:BR&title=Travessa+Douglas+Adams) in [São José](/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Jos%C3%A9,_Santa_Catarina "São José, Santa Catarina"), [Santa Catarina](/wiki/Santa_Catarina_\(state\) "Santa Catarina \(state\)"), [Brazil](/wiki/Brazil "Brazil") is named in Adams's honour.[77] In March 2021 [Unbound](/wiki/Unbound_\(publisher\) "Unbound \(publisher\)") announced a [crowdfunder](/wiki/Crowdfunding "Crowdfunding") for _42: the wildly improbable ideas of Douglas Adams_ , on the 20th anniversary of his death, a book based on Adams's papers, edited by [Kevin Jon Davies](/wiki/Kevin_Jon_Davies "Kevin Jon Davies").[78] ## Awards and nominations[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=17 "Edit section: Awards and nominations")] Year | Award | Work | Category | Result | Reference ---|---|---|---|---|--- 1979 | [Hugo Award](/wiki/Hugo_Award "Hugo Award") | _[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(radio_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(radio series\)")_ (shared with [Geoffrey Perkins](/wiki/Geoffrey_Perkins "Geoffrey Perkins")) | [Best Dramatic Presentation](/wiki/Hugo_Award_for_Best_Dramatic_Presentation "Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation") | Nominated | ## Works[[edit](/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&action=edit§ion=18 "Edit section: Works")] * _[The Private Life of Genghis Khan](/wiki/The_Private_Life_of_Genghis_Khan "The Private Life of Genghis Khan")_ (1975), based on a comedy sketch Adams co-wrote with [Graham Chapman](/wiki/Graham_Chapman "Graham Chapman") (short story) * _[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(radio_series\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(radio series\)")_ (1978) (radio series) * _[The Pirate Planet](/wiki/The_Pirate_Planet "The Pirate Planet")_ (1978), a [Doctor Who](/wiki/Doctor_Who "Doctor Who") serial * _[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy](/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_\(book\) "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy \(book\)")_ (1979) (novel) * _[City of Death](/wiki/City_of_Death "City of Death")_ (1979), a Doctor Who serial * _[Shada](/wiki/Shada_\(Doctor_Who\) "Shada \(Doctor Who\)")_ (1979–1980), a Doctor Who serial * _[The Restaurant at the End of the Universe](/wiki/The_Restaurant_at_the_End_of_the_Universe "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe")_ (1980) (novel) * _[A Liar's Autobiography](/wiki/A_Liar%27s_Autobiography "A Liar's Autobiography") (Volume VI)_ (1980) authored by [Graham Chapman](/wiki/Graham_Chapman "Graham Chapman"), with [David Sherlock](/wiki/David_Sherlock "David Sherlock"), Alex Martin, [David A.
